Schladming is a six-hundred-year old city that later became a winter sports resort. Although the remaining medieval ramparts give a unique charm to the city, Schladming has welcomed skiers and non-skiers for more than a century. Today, the resort’s experience is obvious. It boasts good artificial snowmaking, new chairlifts, and runs designed specifically for beginners. The little town of Dachstein has tried to make the incredibly immense ski area more accessible, but for the moment, it can only be reached by bus. Unfortunately, these buses are neither frequent nor punctual. The lower valley is accessible by car.
