Zag’‘s Freeride skis are generally well accepted as part of the skiing establishment. It has taken many skiers a couple of years to get used to Zag’‘s very radical designs, the softer flexes and huge sidecuts that set them apart from other manufacturers a few years ago and seemed almost alien in their time are now savoured by those who have learnt to adapt their skiing or are part of the latest and most radical skiing generation. Personally I like the nimbleness of the FR 75 model, but if you like more support under-foot then you’‘ll love the relaxed silky ride of the ‘‘84’‘s in powder and spring snow. N.b. I said “in” the snow, they are not the best on hard pack or frozen cruddy snow, it’‘s gotta’‘ be deep for you to feel any glory underfoot. The Big has had a reworked cosmetic for 2007, they look good, and are both very light and forgiving but there is a lot of competition, the stronger, wider Seth Pistol from K2 remains outrageous fun, the Karma by Volkl is sublime when you hit the s*it and Stockli’‘s Stormrider is a huge Swiss powerhouse of a ski. So the Big’‘s have a lot to keep up with but they are definitely worth a try.
